It felt like that. Can you imagine a tiny little baby like me travelling over the Pacific Ocean on a flight almost 14 hours long, crossing over the date-line, landing in a country where people drive on the wrong side of the road? Well, at least my dad thought so when he mistakenly drove to the 'right' side a couple of times. Anyway, I am talking about our little trip to USA. Daddy has been travelling a lot lately and mostly without us around. That is not fair at all for a little girl like me. He was missing out on a lot of things. So despite the possibility of this being a huge challenge, my parents decided to travel as a family for his next work trip. To sweeten it a little bit, daddy mixed his business with some vacation leaves as well.
Traveling with two kids under two is stressful from the moment you decide to do it. The planning has to be perfect. Going from home to the airport itself is a challenge. My parents kept reminding themselves of being in the '
Amazing Race'. There were so many things to think about ... How to go through security with water bottles and sterile water? How will we bring along our car seats? Should we check-in the stroller or not? What would be the right type of car to hire when we land in Los Angeles? All of that had to be pre-planned and ready to go. Because once you hit the road, there is not much opportunity to change things.
But in the end, it all went pretty well. Daddy intentionally made sure we were flying in the new A380 airbuses so that there were more room to move - especially if both my sister and I got flight-sick. The plane was not really full and the kind ground staff made sure the seat in between my mom and dad were kept blocked. We had a bassinet seat - so my sleeping arrangement was sorted.
I was amazing on the way up - hardly a cry. It was a bit uncomfortable while we took off and about to land - but that was about it. Rest of the flight I settled in a cozy sleep. Meanwhile my sister was making friends with co-passengers. She was running around and saying hello to whoever she could find. As we landed in LA, taking a couple of trolley full of luggages to our car rental booth proved to be a little more challenging - but it all got sorted out eventually. Finally we were on our way to our holiday apartment.
Majority of our stay in California was in Anaheim. The holiday apartment is just next to Disneyland. Mommy and daddy already pre-ordered some groceries for delivery to the holiday apartment. When we arrived, it was all sorted out for us. We just had to work out what we wanted to do. Well it was easy for the first day - all of us just slept.
Rest our stay went on pretty smoothly. Firstly we went around the various parts of LA to get star-struck. My parents didn't have too much luck though. But with two pretty princess around them, they didn't care much anyway. So it was Sunset Boulevard, Santa Monica Piers, Beverley Hills, Kodak Theatre and all the places my parents have heard off from their lifetime of TV watching - we followed the trail. My sister had a stopover at the
American Girl to pick up a doll.
Daddy had his company conference in San Diego. So half-way into our trip, we took a road trip from LA to San Diego. It was a bit tough ... those two days as mommy had to tackle us by herself when we were in hotel. Daddy had to be out and about most days. But then there was Lola Tess. She made sure she was available for us despite her very busy schedule. So as daddy will leave for the day, mommy will get us ready ahead of Lola Tess picking us up. She'd then take us around and return us back home late in the evening, when daddy is back. We went around shopping and eating with Ninang and titas, Nicole and Steph.
After daddy finished her work part of the trip, we took a drive back towards LA again - Anaheim to be specific. This time, we have planned for a trip to the Disneyland. It was a fun-filled trip. While I ensured I made it easy for the rest of them by not crying, my mom and dad and sister Ayesha had a ball. They bounced around from attraction to attraction and taking pictures along the way with Mickey, Minnie and the others. End of the day, the little kids in my mom and dad was saying, we got to be back here when Aliyah is a little bit bigger. I know it wasn't me they want to go back there for!
Oh well, after a good 10-days of hanging out in USA, it was time to be back home. My parents were very thankful neither me nor Ayesha picked up any sickness despite some late nights and cool weather of California. We all got to the airport with plenty of time in our hand. You should have seen daddy juggle with now even bigger and heavier luggage. There's one lesson to learn when travelling with kids ... if you can, just travel with the kids and no luggage. Daddy will swear to that.
The flight back was a little more stressful. I wasn't totally comfortable and neither was my sister. Half way through the flight, we both started to cry. That took a little bit of effort to manage. Thankfully even the stewards were helping out. Eventually we touched down in Sydney ... bringing to an end to an amazing adventure. We hi-five'd each other for being such a great family. We had a wonderful time together. Daddy and mommy was so pleased. Daddy would feel less guilty next time he had to travel again without us.
